Wall-Mounted Storage Shelves in the Garage |
|
|
|
|
Storage solutions for the garage abound; however, the most popular form of garage storage has long been and remains storage shelves. The most common form of garage storage shelves are wall-mounted, which are affixed to the wall with a bracket. Wall mounted garage shelving is installed vertically and involves pre-made slots into which go metal brackets. This type of shelving is similar to what you might find in the kitchen or inside a closet. Both wood and metal varieties of such shelves are available, making them a customizable option for any space.
To install wall-mounted storage shelves, follow these easy steps:
• |
You will need to use a stud finder to locate the studs in the walls in order to know where to hang your shelves. When using a stud finder, it’s a good idea to make a small mark on the wall where you’ve found the stud so that you don’t make any mistakes when you come back with the drill. |
• |
Based on the found location of the wall studs, decide where you want your shelves to go. Laying the first shelf standard on the wall in the location that you would like it, use a pencil to mark where the holes for the screws are. |
• |
Using your pencil markings as a guideline, drill into the wall with a 1/8-inch drill bit. |
• |
Line the shelf standard up with the holes that you have drilled. Now, it is time to affix the standard to the wall by screwing screws into the already drilled holes. Do the top screws first. |
• |
With the top screws in, it’s a good idea to verify that the standard is straight with a level. |
• |
Now it is time to screw in the bottom screws of the standard. |
• |
It’s almost time to install the second standard. To be sure that your standards are going to line up, insert brackets into the corresponding spots on the standards. Again, use your level to verify that the two standards are even. |
• |
Once this is completed, install the second standard using the same process as the first. |
• |
With both standards installed, insert the remainder of the brackets into the standards. You may want to use screws as necessary for securing the brackets. |
• |
With the brackets in place, lay the shelf itself on the brackets. |
When installing such shelving in the garage space, make sure to take safety precautions in advance of beginning the installation process. Proper safety glasses and gloves may be a good idea when using power tools such as a power drill. Additionally, make sure that the space that you will be working in is clear of any debris or clutter that could cause you to slip and fall.
