The garage is an area of the home that for many homeowners is in need of a great overhaul when it comes to organization. Years of not being attentive toward what is in the garage and where everything is kept can lead to complete disarray once it eventually catches up with you.
For many people, the solution to this problem is a garage storage system. Implementing a garage storage system is a very worthwhile project in that it brings efficiency and organization to the garage. However, what are the many types of systems that are available out there? What’s the best one for your garage? Read on: we’re here to help.
When comparing garage storage systems there are two main questions to ask yourself:
1. What can this garage storage system do for my space?
2. What can this garage storage system NOT do for my space?
To begin to evaluate storage systems based on the criteria above, you may want to begin with categorization. While some storage systems involve cabinetry either mounted to the wall or placed on the floor space of the garage, others are a series of shelves instead. Meanwhile, there are also systems that are essentially a series of drawers that can be opened or closed.
Ask yourself: what is the use of each of these storage systems, and is it useful for your particular garage needs? For example, a storage system that involves a lot of small drawers might be perfect for a workspace such as a place to repair cars or take on other projects. Small drawers would be great for tools. However, if you are not the type to need tools but rather need somewhere to store sports equipment or lawn care items, bigger more spacious areas may be more suitable for you.
Keep in mind that all storage systems are built differently, and therefore they each come with restrictions, particularly when it comes to the weight that they can store. Many of the things that we keep in the garage actually tend to be quite heavy, and it would be a shame to install an entire shelving unit that can’t handle the weight load of the things that you want to store on them.
Further considerations may come with whether you store your car in your garage and therefore need floor space, whether you have children, how much stuff you have to store in the garage, and how you would ideally like to use the garage space. Many people turn the garage into an extension of the home, using it as a workspace, a play space, or a retreat of sorts. Depending on how you want to use the garage, different storage systems will support the efficiency of what the garage is doing for you.
