New Uses for That Old Garage |

Is your home starting to feel cluttered? Do you find yourself feeling like there there’s just never enough space, enough storage, or enough rooms? If so, you’re not alone. Plenty of homeowners feel a crunch in their livable space from time to time. If moving or adding onto the home isn’t an option for you, as it isn’t for many people for a wide range of reasons, don’t despair. There may still be a solution to your problem, and it’s probably lurking just beyond the main space of the home. That’s right: the garage. The garage can provide an excellent opportunity to create a new space. It just takes a little creativity and thinking outside of the box.
But what about all of that stuff I am currently keeping in the garage, you ask? Well, the answer to that question comes in a few different points. First: there’s a good chance that there are a few things in the garage that you could stand to lose. Your son’s baseball gear that he hasn’t used since he was in Little League fifteen years ago? That stuff can probably be donated to a local charity, rather than taking up dust in the corner of your garage. Same goes for the roller blades you bought and used once and the artificial Christmas tree that you stopped putting up ten years ago. Spend a good day or so in the garage really evaluating just what you need and what you can afford to instead get rid of.
After cleaning out the garage, it’s a good idea to create a really solid storage plan. How can you organize the things that you’ve decided to keep so that you create the most open space? Hint: wall shelves and overhead storage are great ways to save floor space!
Once you’ve created a little space for yourself, it’s time to think about the new possibilities that the room holds. Some common new uses for garages include:
|
• |
A workout room: set up your exercise gear, weights, and a TV so that you can do that yoga video you’ve been meaning to start doing every morning. |
• |
A laundry room: if running plumbing to the garage is an option, throwing the washer and dryer out in the garage can be a huge space saver inside the main space of the home |
• |
Music studio: do you and/or your kids have a desire to play music? The garage band is called such for a reason. The garage can be a great place to store musical instruments and to play them, particularly if the garage is insulated and sound proof. |
• |
Home office: with the growing ubiquity of the internet and jobs that can be done remotely, home offices are becoming a must for most Americans. Give yourself a space where you can get your work done in peace and quiet by adding a small office space to the garage. |
