Garage Organization Tips |
 |
|
 |
 |
Is your garage in need of some major work? Between holiday decorations, old sports equipment, bikes, lawn care tools, and more, it’s easy for the garage to lose any sense of order and fast. If your garage has gotten to the point where you’re tripping over old stuff or not parking your car inside, it’s time for an organization overhaul.
To make sure that your organization project is a successful one follow these simple tips.
1) |
First things first: take inventory of what you have, and sort it all out. Do you really still need the sports equipment that hasn’t fit the kids for years anyway? Sort everything into piles: to keep and not to keep. |
2) |
Decide what to do with the pile of stuff not to keep, and do it right away. Either donate it to a local charity or hold a garage sale. |
3) |
With the pile of stuff you do want to keep, organize it into logical groupings. For example, put all of your holiday decorations in one area and put all of your gardening tools in another. |
4) |
For items that you only need at specific times of the year, such as a Christmas tree or pool toys, put organized piles of items in storage containers. Label the storage containers so that you know what is in each one. |
5) |
Cabinetry and shelving is a great way to get everything off of the ground. Install shelving on the wall or purchase freestanding cabinets. |
6) |
For safety, store heavy items on bottom shelves and lighter items up top. |
7) |
For items such as bikes and rakes that don’t fit in cabinets, consider installing hanging hooks or racks. |
8) |
Create loft storage by laying plywood over the rafters of the garage. Large, lightweight items can then be stored up top. |
9) |
If you still need more storage, you might want to build a storage platform that rests right above where the hood of your car lands when the car is parked in the garage. This way the storage won’t interfere with the car, and you’ll make great use of space that otherwise would have been lost. |
10) |
If storage is still an issue, you might want to consider taking some of your materials elsewhere. Yard sheds come in metal, wood, and vinyl varieties and are a great place to store anything that couldn’t fit in the garage. For a big yard, a shed can actually be even more convenient than the garage, because it allows you to keep lawn care and gardening items outside right where you need them. |
By following these simple tips, your garage storage project should go off without a hitch. In no time, you’ll be enjoying a space that was once the bane of your existence: the garage!
