Organizing your garage does not have to be an expensive adventure. By investing in affordable shelving, cabinets, pegboard and a few other functional items, your garage can be the most productive room in your home, allowing you instant access to tools, cleaning supplies, seasonal decorations and sporting equipment.
Plastic containers to store miscellaneous items like rags, tapes and adhesives, sponges, paintbrushes and chamois for waxing a vehicle are an inexpensive yet highly effective method to prevent loss and damage of these small but necessary items. Purchasing small, see-through containers are also good ways to get you motivated to organize your garage. Start by putting nails, screws, washers and other smaller items into containers and placing them on a shelf installed in an area you plan to convert into a workspace.
Utility carts are also marvelous motivators because they provide the immediate ability to organize a variety of items in one place. Easy to manage and compact enough to move anywhere in a garage, utility carts provide enough caddies to place cleaning supplies, cleaning brushes, squeegees, mops, rags and even handheld vacuum cleaners to keep vehicles as well as the garage neat, clean and organized.
Do you want to recycle but lack the accessories necessary to recycle properly? Garages offer the space and ability to recycle or retain items until you can appropriately dispose of them. First, clean an area of your garage large enough to install two or three wall cabinets in which to place old batteries, oil-based paint cans, used oil, CFL bulbs and other chemicals needing to be discarded safely. Underneath these cabinets, put two large plastic trash cans, one for newspapers, magazines and other paper-based trash and the other for compost material. You might consider putting a small trash compactor in this area as well to optimize your ability to recycle.
All children would love to have his or her own workshop area similar to what Dad has in the garage, somewhere they could paint, glue and get creative without worrying about soiling Mom's carpet. In addition to being an innovative way to organize, constructing a "kid's zone" in the garage by purchasing a small workbench equipped with caddies to hold crayons, markers, poster paints, brushes, glues and other craft items will not only spark your child's creativity but also keep him or her entertained for hours. Workbenches with both large and small drawers can also hold poster board, construction paper and drawing paper.
For families with physically active members, converting an area of your garage into a locker room will not only keep dirty, smelly sports equipment from entering the home but also help sports enthusiasts keep their cleats, bats, hockey sticks and footballs organized and easily accessible. How many times have you heard "Mom, where's my baseball glove"? or "Dad, where's my basketball"? With large cabinets and hooks installed in the garage for storing valuable athletic items, kids will now have a place to put away their soccer balls and baseball bats and know exactly where they are next time they need them.
Organizing the garage also means paying attention to safety, especially if toddlers and small children frequently play in the garage. Ensure their safety and never worry about accidental poisoning of both kids and pets by investing in cabinets equipped with secure locking mechanisms only you are able open using keys, combination locks or heavy-duty bolt locks. |
