Planning Garage Cabinet Installation |
All you will need for this project is masking tape and measuring tape and, of course, a strong desire to organize your garage into a clean, safe and attractive place!
First, remove everything from your garage to determine the amount of space you need to put back the things you want to keep. If you are reluctant to begin what may seem to be an insurmountable task, make it easier by delegating your garage stuff into three piles--one for keep, one for donating or putting in a garage sale and one for trash.
Create subpiles out of your "keep" pile to further organize your stuff. Seasonal decorations here, sports equipment there, another pile for tools and another for personal/home items. This "create-a-pile" scheme may seem overly simply but it will actually help you recognize how much cabinet space you will ultimately need when mounting your garage cabinets.
If you plan to park a vehicle, motorcycle or ATV in the garage, don't forget to consider this when planning for cabinet placement. Make sure you leave enough room to open car doors so that you won't have to remove the cabinets later. Use the masking tape to mark the outline of the car if space is tight and you want a guarantee that there will be enough space in your garage for cabinets and a vehicle.
Cleaning the garage and preparing it for cabinets was the easy part of this project. Now you have to pick the right cabinets for the space you have as well as for the type of items you plan to keep. Essentially, there are two kinds of garage cabinets you can purchase--wall-mounted or floor cabinets. Floor cabinets also come as stationary or with rollers so they can be moved anywhere in the garage. Consider how many larger items you have that need extra floor space compared to smaller items that can sit comfortably on shelves.
While customized cabinetry is also available and, unfortunately, more expensive than prefabricated garage cabinets, ordering cabinets crafted to your specifications will definitely satisfy all your storage needs and also allow you the opportunity to add a personal touch to your garage decor.
Don't forget to use the measuring tape! You will need to mark and measure areas of your garage where you plan to mount cabinets or place standing cabinets that are stationary. When you order customized cabinets or purchase prefabricated cabinets, you will also need to know what size cabinets you need--height, length and sometimes even the approximate weight of the cabinet.
Finally, plan that garage sale as soon as you possibly can so all that unwanted stuff doesn't get dragged back into your beautifully organized garage! |
