Long ago, the garage was used for one thing: storing the car. Back then, garage cabinets were not popular – in fact, they were rare. However, as families have grown and have begun to do more and more, the amount of stuff that is kept in the garage has naturally increased. Today, many families desire organization in the garage space. Garage cabinets help to promote garage organization by providing a way to separate items into groups and also by providing a place to store items that may be hazardous to certain people or pets. Garage cabinets are increasing the modern family’s ability to use the garage to the best of its potential.
There are four major types of garage cabinets available to homeowners today:
1) Molded plastic cabinets
2) Laminated surface cabinets
3) Metal cabinets
4) Recycled kitchen cabinets
Let’s learn a little bit more about each of these types of cabinets now.
Molded plastic cabinets are typically built specifically for use in a garage space, and they are also rather affordable. The reason that molded plastic cabinets are so popular in the garage is that they are really easy to keep clean – the plastic surface can easily be wiped, and they are rust and water resistant. Molded plastic cabinets are also very easy to install, and their assembly usually requires little more than a few pieces snapping together. Lockable doors, adjustable shelves, and the ability to wall mount the cabinets are common features of molded plastic kitchen cabinets.
Laminated surface cabinets are sturdy cabinets that are often manufactured with plywood, particleboard, or medium-density fiberboard cores. Laminated surface cabinets require more assembly than molded plastic cabinets, but they do come in a wide range of appearances. Laminated surface cabinets come in a wide range of sizes, colors, and styles.
Metal cabinets give the garage what many think of as a “classic garage look”. Metal cabinets are durable, as they are often made of heavy-duty steel. Heavy-duty steel is somewhat pricy though, so if budget is an issue, this look may not be the best option. As of late, though, some manufacturers have begun to make lightweight, affordable, consumer-grade metal cabinets, giving homeowners the option of a professional garage look at home. Many of these lightweight options come in a variety of color options via a power-coat of paint.
