Jobsite Tool Organization |
|
|
|
|
As anyone who has worked on a construction site knows, keeping tools and equipment at the jobsite can be difficult. There is so much to think about on a typical construction site, contractors simply don’t always have the time to constantly stay on top of the organization component of a smooth site.
As many know, this is a huge problem. Tools are a very necessary step in the construction process, and a lack of organization with the tools causes hiccups in the workflow that can be detrimental to keeping a project on schedule long term. For this reason it’s a good idea to implement organization and storage plans before the job begins so as to ensure efficiency throughout the job process.
Every job requires its own storage system, and since no two jobs are alike, neither are any two storage plans. When the lead contractor is considering what type of storage plan is appropriate for a particular job, he or she should consider the following components:
• A chest is great when attached to a car or other automobile as it is mobile
• Chests are particularly appropriate for large volumes of storage
• Cabinets are a great supplement when a lot of storage is necessary
• Cabinets also allow for great organization, since they provide a place for each tool to belong.
Security is a huge issue on all construction sites, as tools are very valuable. When considering what type of jobsite storage options you should employ on your next project, take the following security tips into consideration.
• |
Consider the security of the storage area. Does the system have a solid lock system? Deadbolt-style locks are the most secure system that remains easy to use. |
• |
There are two types of locks available to construction sites: different and “key alike”. Key alike lock systems put the same lock on every different storage unit on the site, allowing anyone to gain access to any storage system on the site so long as they have the proper key. Different locks on every storage unit require a unique key for each component. |
• |
Thieves often use bolt cutters to get into a locked space, which is not possible with recessed lock compartments. For this reason, recessed lock compartments are suggested. |
• |
A lid with a hemmed edge on the storage system keeps tools from becoming wedged between the bottom portion of the box and the lid. |
• |
Hinges on the storage box should be welded and staked. This is a security measure as it prevents would-be thieves from knocking out a hinge pin. |
• |
Riveted hinges are not optimal because they can be easily pried open. |
• |
Reinforcement channels in the lid provide optimal strength in the lid. They also prevent damage to the lid. |
By paying attention to both security and organization, a contractor is able to manage the jobsite in a way that boosts efficiency and communication while protecting valuable equipment. |
